The birth of a pearl it is a wonderful event. Unlike
precious stones or metals that must be extracted from
the Earth, pearls are created by alive mussels in the
depths of the sea. Precious stones must polish before
they show his beauty; pearls do not need such treatments
to reveal his enchantment. They are born with iridiscente
luster and smooth internal brightness that is not equaled
to any other gem in the world. Pearls natural life begins
when a strange object, like a parasite or a particle
of sand, lodges by accident in the smooth body of the
mussel from which it cannot be expelled.
In a effort to alleviate this annoyance, the body of
the mussel initiates a defensive action. The mussel begins to
secrete a smooth and simultaneously hard crystalline
substance around the irritating object, with the purpose
of protecting itself. This substance is called nacre.
While the strange body remains within the body of the mussel,
this one will continue secreting nacre around the object,
layer after layer. After several years, the irritating
object will be locked up totally within this silky crystalline
layer.
